Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Electrical and Computer Engineering is Looking for a Few Good ProjectsBring them on. Bring them all on. We have a number of senior electrical and computer engineering students looking for a good challenge. For three years these students have been studying the principles of engineering and now they are ready for some real problems.
Give them your untried problems and open-ended problems that will stretch their problem-solving skills. Give them something real, messy and complex – something that will fuel their creative thinking. Give them something your engineers should be doing, but just don’t have the time or funds. If you think you have a problem that’s big enough, hard enough, challenging enough, give us a call. We have teams of electrical and/or computer engineering students that are ready for a real-world project. Some of the projects have received development support from the National Collegiate Inventors & Innovators Alliance (NCIIA -- www.nciia.org). Three Rose-Hulman teams have won NCIIA awards since 1999, and at least four patents have resulted from our projects!
| In roughly 25 weeks our teams have solved a wide variety of problems, ranging from:
- Designing, building and deploying a paper winder in a dirty industrial setting.
- Programming a high-end FPGA attached to an A/D and D/A to mimic an RFID tag and reader in real time.
- Giving a GPS a voice to guide the blind.
- Building a spoon that helps train the blind.
- Positioning a mirror to micro radian accuracy for a satellite.
The list goes on and on. Here are some of the recent projects: 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000 Clients come from small one-man companies to corporate leaders such as Texas Instruments, ITT Aerospace, Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation and RCA to government agencies to community service organizations. |
What Benefits Can A Client Receive?Clients will get several benefits from this partnership with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, including:
- Project Solution. Sponsors retain full rights to all intellectual property developed by the team.
- Association with one of the premier undergraduate engineering schools in the world.Rose-Hulman students are among the best undergraduate students in the nation.
- Access to knowledgeable, creative, and enthusiastic ECE students prior to graduation. Many of these students could be prospective employees – for full-time, internship or co-op positions with your company.
- Collaboration in educating future engineers.
| The Four Parts for Engineering Design EducationThe four parts needed are Industrial Partners, Engineering Students, Ventures Consultants, and ECE Faculty Supervisors. Industrial Partners provide the problem, consult with engineering students through periodic reviews, receive a final briefing, and report, critique the project and cover nominal project costs.
Engineering Students work in a project team, consult with Industry Partners through periodic reviews, provide a final briefing and report, and provide a budget of project cost. Ventures Consultants are employed at Rose-Hulman Ventures, the college’s business and engineering project incubator, and provide project management experience as consultants to the design team. Confidentiality agreements can be drawn up between the client and Rose-Hulman to product your idea. Faculty Supervisors provide guidance and evaluation, coordinate use of ECE equipment and facilities, but are not part of the design team. Students do the work!

Engineering Student Design ExperienceThe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has brought together many aspects of science and engineering in a design experience in which students analyze and synthesize information, make decisions, work in teams, propose and optimize a design, and often build a prototype.
| |
This engineering design experience has been distributed throughout the entire four-year ECE curriculum. However, in the senior year the ECE student has to complete a yearlong design project. Each engineering student is expected to spend a minimum of 250 hours on project work. | Types of Projects: Anything from D.C. to Light! Our students are able to do projects in most areas of electrical and computer engineering. These are also opportunities for collaborative projects between ECE students and other academic departments (mechanical engineering, computer science, optical engineering and chemical engineering – to name just a few of the options). The instructional and educational nature of these projects is as important as the successful completion of the project. These projects are executed by engineering students for which they receive a grade. Don't expect a project solution by experienced engineers, since this is their first big project. However, the students have taken two courses in team-based design and have a solid background in the technical fundamentals. This gives us confidence that the students are well-prepared and should provide useful results.
Student Abilities in the ECE DepartmentThe typical ECE students has mastered by their sophomore year all the skills needed to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. By the junior year these students have completed courses in the following areas: - Communication Systems
- Computer Architecture
- Control Systems
- Digital and Analog Electronics
- DSP
- Electromagnetics
- Electromagnetic Compatibility
- Embedded Systems
- Linear and Digital Systems
- Power Systems
- Signal Processing
- Wireless Applications
|
ECE students have design experiences throughout their freshman, sophomore and junior years. Student experiences include team organization and operation, engineering economics, ethics, decision-making reporting, testing, etc. In addition, many smaller projects are included in their first three years.
